Do hairs know they've been cut?

Hello,

I have a question about body hair. When we remove unwanted body hair by plucking/shaving, we know that they grow back more or less to its natural length.

When we trim them, the hair also seem to grow back to its natural length, but this has mystified me for some time. a) How does the hair know it's been cut without stress caused to the hair follicle, and therefore start growing again; and

b) How does it know when to stop growing when it reaches the intended length?

Ginny - So, the short answer is that your hair doesn't know that it's been cut. This is a really common myth. People think that if they trim their head hair when they're trying to grow it, that it'll make it grow faster and people say that if shave your legs or your face, it makes it grow back faster, but that's not actually the case. The only thing that affects how long your hair is and how fast it grows is the hair itself and your genetics. So, hair goes through 3 phases when it's growing. There's the anagen phase which is the growth phase and this is when it actually grows, when it gets longer. Now, on head hair, that can last between 2 and 6 years and how long that phase is, counts as how long your hair could grow to. So, some people seem to be really lucky and they can grow hair down to their waist whereas other people, no matter how hard they try, it will never get pass shoulder length.

Ginny - No, not their eyelashes. Now, that's a point because body hair has a much shorter anagen phase. It's only a couple of months and that's why it never gets as long as head hair. I think there are few exceptions of weird people who've managed to grow their underarm hair ridiculously long in the Guinness Book of Records, but with a couple of weird exceptions, it doesn't get as long as the hair on your head because this anagen phase only last a couple of months. Now after that phase, what happens is the hair is cut off from the blood supply so the follicle sort of dies and it enters a dormant stage and then a bit of time after that, it'll fall out as a new hair begins to grow. So, what you're seeing is you're trimming say, your leg hair while it's still in the anagen phase - it's going to continue growing. But it can only ever get to a certain length because that anagen phase will end and it will fall out.

Dark Eyes Circle

How do we get dark circles and how do we get rid of them?
It’s disheartening to look in the mirror and see dark circles under your eyes. You might expect them after pulling an all-nighter, but what if those pesky shadows don’t seem to go away even with a full night’s rest? It turns out it’s not just a lack of sleep that can bring them on with genetics being most at fault. But don’t despair–it’s not too difficult to make them go away or at least appear lighter.


What are they?
In most cases, dark eye circles are blood vessels under the eyes that can be seen through the skin. Since deoxygenated blood is blue, when it passes close to the surface of the skin it gives off a bluish tint.


What causes them?
Genetics
If you’re fair skinned, unfortunately you can add dark eye circles after sunburns to your list of skin-related issues. Fair skin is more transparent allowing more of the blue tint of the blood vessels to show through. Other inherited traits that contribute to dark eye circles are having thinner skin than most, Periorbital Hyperpigmentaiton, and deep-set bone structure which can cause shadowing around the eyes.


Age
As we get older, skin loses collagen and thins out causing it to become more translucent. Skin also begins to sag which can cause shadowing around the eyes.


Allergies
The histamines released during an allergy attack inflame the blood vessels and cause swelling. Rubbing the eyes due to itching doesn’t help either as it can cause broken blood vessels.


Illness and/or Medications
Anemia or an iron deficiency can result in dark eye circles as not enough oxygen reaches the body’s tissues. Liver problems can also be a cause. Any medications that make blood vessels dilate can cause eye circles to darken as well.


Nasal Congestion
According to the Mayo Clinic, nasal congestion can cause dark eye circles due to the veins that drain from your eyes to your nose becoming widened and darker. Try a neti pot or a saline spray to release some of the pressure.


How to treat them
There are some simple steps you can take to improve the appearance of dark eye circles. Doubling up on pillows and sleeping more propped up can stop blood from pooling under your eyes. A five minute cold compress upon waking (or the classic cucumbers on the eyes) can help constrict blood vessels giving a more refreshed look.

There are also a variety of eye creams on the market designed for dark eye circles. Some have caffeine to constrict blood vessels, some have green tea to strengthen capillary walls, some are collagen-building (retinol is the most famous of this kind). Eating a diet rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids and drinking plenty of water can drastically help your skin’s appearance including the skin around the eyes.


How to cover them up
When done correctly, makeup can mask even the darkest circles. First, apply eye cream and let it dry completely. Then choose a creamy concealer slightly lighter than your normal foundation to match the fairer skin around the eyes. Pat it along the circles and blend into the top of the check bone. Top with loose powder to set the makeup and keep it from getting caught in the creases.

If you are unsure the cause of your dark eye circles, try gently stretching the skin under your eyes. If it becomes darker, it is probably due to genetics or aging as it shows the darkness is due to an underlying color and not the skin itself. If the color doesn’t change, it’s most likely due to allergies or UV exposure.

10 Things You Need To Know Before Getting Laser Hair Removal


1. Stay out of the sun before your appointment.
At *least* four weeks before, to be exact. You can't receive this treatment if you're sunburned — or even if you have a tan.


2. You must shave the area you’re getting lasered.
Do NOT proceed to come in with your hairy self. This isn't like waxing, and you don't need to grow your unwanted hair out beforehand.

On that note, you can't come in for laser hair removal if you've had a wax recently. Remember: The laser targets the PIGMENT of your hair follicle, and the follicle actually has to be there in order for this to work.

The best thing you can do is shave a day before your appointment. If you don't, your physician will most likely provide you with a razor so you can get 'er done!


3. Your physician will provide a test patch on your skin at your first appointment.
The sad truth is that not everyone's skin will react well to cosmetic laser treatments. Pigment problems, discoloration, and scarring can occur with some skin types, which is why it's important to allow your physician to conduct a small test patch first.


4. Your appointment can take anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour.

How to Keep Your Body in Good Shape


Staying in shape is all about making good choices, and making them consistently. With the constant distractions of family and work or school, it can be easy for your body to slip out of shape before you even realize it.
